Proposed plans: Fulfilling the market’s potential The proposed City Market will be designed to create a prime setting for vendors to thrive and for downtown residents to connect. Designed in collaboration with a USDA City Market expert, the 11,000-square-foot structure was designed to create an optimal space for vendors and patrons to thrive. It will feature a community kitchen, year-round availability and an environmentally-conscientious design. The plans call for a relocation to Museum Drive to include an open outdoor meeting ground complimentary to the Riverfront. This space will include an open-air pavilion, a sitting area and a gazebo, and would be available for weddings, corporate events and picnics. Indoor and outdoor vendor space will allow for year-round service. Once a decision to move forward is made, development could take place quickly enough for the new market to be open and operational as early as next summer. Now is the ideal time to develop a new market. Lansing is defying the nationwide economic drain by pushing forward with new developments and allowing the city to grow while most areas are suffering. The proposed City Market would keep the momentum pushing forward and draw in more patrons with a more welcoming façade and increased accessibility, which could restore the City Market to its full potential as a major community hub. Before this plan can move forward, the Lansing City Council must approve it. Your voice counts in this process, and there are many ways for you to show your support.
